Tower22 – All worked up about nothing… for now

HookBeast2

Survival horror Tower22 cropped up on my radar this weekend as something that’s looking totally badass. Problem is, initial reviews seem to have got their wires a little crossed and rather than being a full gameplay video for a title that’s coming soon, what’s on offer is more of a concept video to help the creator attract talented people so he can get this baby made properly!

Tower22 gameplay is looking like a kind of cross between Amnesia and Silent Hill. The game is set in a deserted and fairly hellish tower block environment, which I understand will act as an open world and not force you to travel a linear path. From what I can gather you explore the space alone, interacting with and picking up puzzle elements on your travels. The video shows some delightfully freakish creatures which range from sitting still looking menacing, to being part of the environment, to actively chasing you along particularly poorly lit hallways. It looks to significantly differ from Amnesia though in that there will be combat involved, but details are scarce on this front.

I do wonder though if this game will fall foul of being just too scary to want to play. There have been times during Penumbra, Amnesia, Silent Hill games and even Dead Space when it’s occurred to me that I’m simply not enjoying the game because it’s winding me up too much! Does anyone else ever suffer from this? I don’t know, maybe it’s just me being a wimp. It will be a while before I find out anyway, as Rick reports that Tower22 is still in process of being lifted off the ground, let alone being polished and prepared for our consumption. This makes me sad, but as a positive I hope the publicity surrounding the video has made it much easier for the chap to assemble his production team!

  1. This, like Amnesia, looks intense. The kind of game where I have to remind myself that I’m supposed to be having fun… in between changing my pants.
